Energy Upgrades

The NJ BPU (board of public utilities) along with the Federal Stimulus Package has allocated up to a $5,000 rebate plus $1,500 tax credit for energy upgrades for 1.7 million homes over the next 10 years.

Anyone who owns a home and some that rent are eligible.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, is a national program from the U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE, and offers a comprehensive, whole-house approach to improving energy efficiency and comfort at home, while helping to protect the environment.

Chrisner Group is a Green Homes Solution Provider and acts as your Quality Assurance project manager for the total integrated process. Unlike an individual sub-contractor or a Heating contractor that specializes in one thing, CG helps the Home Owner look at all the possibilities to increase your home’s energy efficiency, greenness, durability and indoor air quality and helps prioritize them in an integrated approach to get the best package for your specific home.

Chrisner Group in conjunction with Pre-qualified BPI Certified Contractors has put together a program to support the new Energy Star Home Performance program.

How the program works is:

The homeowner schedules a Preliminary Safety Audit to check safety issues such as:
    • No unvented fossil fuel appliances
    • No large sources of inside moisture (pools, hot tubs)
    • No visible mold
    • No standing water in basement or crawlspace
    • No roof leaks
    • No flex pipe dryer venting
    • No bathroom vents into attic

    º The Auditor may also:
    • Check the utility bills
    • Measure the dimensions of the house square footage and volume
    • Inspect the Heating system
    • Inspect the Air Conditioning system
    • Inspect the duct work/distribution system
    • Inspect the insulation in basement, crawlspace, walls and attic
    • Inspect the homes appliances
    • Inspect the type of lighting that is used
    • Ask the homeowner about comfort problems in the home
    • Ask the homeowner about any technical problems with the home such as frozen pipes or ice damming

The Auditor will input this data either at the house or back at the office and through an Integrated Whole-Building Approach is able to recommend Energy Measures that will have at least a 25% energy savings and then the Auditor or Sales Consultant will assist the homeowner in prioritizing the measures. Some of these measures include:

    • Upgrading to a high efficiency Heating System.
    • Upgrading to a high efficiency A/C System.
    • Installing a HRV (Heat Recover Ventilator) to increase fresh air exchange.
    • Upgrading to a high efficiency Water Heating System.
    • Upgrade Insulation in walls and ceiling.
    • Air Sealing the home

º After the safety issues are ok and the energy measures are prioritized, the homeowner is eligible for up to $1,000 of free air-sealing. Air Sealing includes the following:
    • A Whole-house Diagnostic Test/Blower Door test (depending on the model of house) before and after the work.
    • Sealing Air leaks in the Attic and basement (refer to Energy Star pamphlet or website for the Air Sealing overview)
